ABSTRACT

This chapter examines norms on the cathedral as a centre of mission in service, evangelism, and witness: the cathedral community; vergers, volunteers, and visitors; and its ministry of outreach its pastoral, social, and ecumenical engagement. Cathedral constitutions provide for the annual meeting of the cathedral community, usually chaired by the dean, in order, for example, to elect representatives to Council. The cathedral interviews reveal a range of understandings as to the cathedral community, the roll, the committee (if there is one), and pastoral care. English cathedrals seek to offer a ministry of hospitality. Cathedrals rely heavily on volunteers and employees. The Archbishops' Commission 1994 recognised a need for the 'rationalisation of management structures' and professionalisation; all staff should have 'clearly defined functions' within a 'structure of accountability'. The Cathedrals Measure 1999 is silent on the solemnisation of marriages and the conducting of funerals at cathedrals.
