ABSTRACT

In a recent case the Consistory Court of the Diocese of Chichester granted a faculty to permit a figure of Christ, originally part of a medieval crucifix made in Limoges, and 'an item of exquisite craftsmanship' held at a parish church in the diocese, 'to be the subject of a long-term loan to Chichester Cathedral so that it may be securely housed in its treasury and therefore available for public viewing'. Under national law, Chapter must compile and maintain an inventory of all objects the property in which is vested in the corporate body, or which are in the possession or custody of the corporate body, or to whose possession or custody the corporate body is entitled, which the cathedral Fabric Advisory Committee considers to be of architectural, archaeological, artistic, or historic interest. The Archbishops' Commission on Cathedrals 1994 made various proposals with regard to finance.
