ABSTRACT

This chapter explains that African Americans have been victims of discrimination and racism for many years. In general, African Americans have higher unemployment rates; lower economic status and, in some cases, poverty; more drug abuse problems; overall poorer health; lower life expectancy; and higher infant mortality rates than other US groups. Also, as with other cultural groups, African American clients will have problems that are unique to specific developmental stages. Regardless of the developmental period of African American clients, counsellors should always remember that religion is deeply rooted in the African American culture. The African American church is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of African American religion and spirituality and maintains a rich history within the culture. Moreover, the church holds considerable moral sway because of the sense of connection, purpose, and empowerment it instils in African Americans, even those who do not maintain regular church attendance or membership.
