ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an explanation of children’s reaction to events that are rare and may never happen, but it is useful to be prepared for any responses one may experience. It focuses on the group work programmes: how they can be used; their value; and the impact they can have on children and the classroom environment as a whole. The activities in the group work programme explore the concept of using reflective language as a behaviour management tool and are designed to motivate and build confidence, self-esteem and resilience. If a child wants to take what they’ve made with them that week, reflect, one really want to take that with one today, but one can take everything with one on the last week. If the child needs to talk more, offer to have some time with them outside the group where they can talk to parents. Ensure parents pass on any concerns to the relevant member of staff in school.
