ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the group is a way of helping them to practise things such as sharing, taking turns and being good friends, and the activities will help them with this. It also presents a weekly overview and facilitator’s guidelines for each session. The facilitator’s guidelines are more detailed and provide examples of reflections to use during the sessions. The group facilitator needs to take the facilitator’s guidelines with them to each session. The activities and tasks in the group work programmes enable children to develop positive feelings about themselves through their behaviour. For example, an activity that involves making something for someone else provides an opportunity to explore how this feels and why. This develops positive feelings and increases the likelihood of the behaviour being repeated outside the group so children activate those feelings about themselves again.
