ABSTRACT

The group facilitator be a learning mentor, teaching assistant, support worker, family worker or other role within the school who has a thorough understanding of children's social and emotional development and is confident working with small groups. They need to be interested in emotional well-being and developing new skills to manage children's behaviour, have a capacity for some self-reflection and a willingness to try using the reflective language skills described. The questionnaires are in the Resources section and be photocopied for each child. The group work sessions provide the facilitator with an ideal opportunity to develop their relationship with the identified children and practise a new way of managing their behaviour by acknowledging and reflecting their feelings. The facilitator will need to share this information with a more senior member of staff within the school, such as the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO), in order to build on the work of the group where necessary.
