ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the longer history of migration in the Bengal delta and beyond in the century before people study. It discusses the story of migration in the delta in the wake of partition and independence, the Liberation War, and the creation of Bangladesh. The book considers strategies of 'home-making' by poorer Muslim migrants in the Bengal borderlands and in the urban centres of Calcutta and Dhaka. It also examines the historical circumstances that shaped patterns of migration and settlement of Bengali Muslims in South Asia and Britain. The book focuses on the neglected experience of women's migration. It explores the role of the festival of Muharram in shaping community and identity among Urdu speakers in Bangladesh. The book finally presents similar themes among the British Bangladeshi community.
