ABSTRACT

The author describes expectations of what being a CrossFit athlete should entail and 'look like'. These aspects of his complicity, whether intentional or unintentional, need to be explored further and it is in this chapter that he want to unpack, through the example of his own 'metamorphosis', questions relating to embodied control, complicity and compliance. Janet Jackson informs us in her song 'I'm in control' that she is now in a situation where she has taken charge. By maintaining a research diary throughout the process, the author was able to look back at the entries and attempt to build a picture of this embodied transition. CrossFit is coterminous with 'Ian' and appears to dictate the way in which social interactions are staged—not only with colleagues who engage in CrossFit. But also with others who do not have any background knowledge about what CrossFit entails, apart from awareness that it incorporates some form of fitness training.
