ABSTRACT

It has almost become a maxim of modern management that command and control leadership no longer works. It is now often said that, instead of using command and control techniques, leaders should seek to empower followers (Kouzes and Posner 2007: 21):

Leaders understand that the command-and-control techniques of traditionalmanagement no longer apply. Instead, leaderswork tomake people feel strong, capable, and committed. Leaders enable others to act not by hoarding the power they have but by giving it away.
