ABSTRACT

Implicit in the discussion of the instrumental functions that squares can serve is the fact that purpose and size are interrelated. Whether a square is perceived to be large or small, too large or too small, is relative. A square’s ‘appropriate’ size depends on the purposes that it serves – on whether its form fits its instrumental or symbolic function – and the context within which it sits. Squares certainly come in a range of sizes. In this chapter we distinguish among mega-large, large, medium and small squares, based on our perceptions of what constitutes a particular size.
