ABSTRACT
Through an odd twist of fate, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake occurred during the 'Battle of the Bay' baseball World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's at 5:07 p.m. This was the first time the teams had met in a world series representing Bay Area cities and thus of heightened regional interest. Residents avoided the Bay Bridge and adjacent freeways that day to avoid traffic or were glued to the television watching their favourite teams when the earthquake struck.
