ABSTRACT

This chapter takes a closer look at the bureaucratic arm of the world’s leading intergovernmental energy organization. Created in 1974 to enable its members develop a coordinated response to oil supply disruptions, the IEA has, in recent years, moved well beyond the confines of its original mission. The widening of its issue portfolio, partnerships with the UNFCCC Secretariat and the IPCC, and greater advocacy for more aggressive climate change mitigation and a speedier low-carbon transition have helped to draw the global energy and climate governance architectures closer together.
