ABSTRACT

[This chapter presents a typology for double-skin façades. Classification criteria for cavity partitioning, ventilation type, and ventilation mode are built on categories previously established in the international context by Oesterle, Lieb, Lutz & Heusler in Double-Skin Facades: Integrated Planning (2001) and the Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) researchers in their comprehensive 2004 report, “Ventilated Double Facades—Classification and illustration of façade concepts.” The text defines the following classifications: cavity partitioning (box window, shaft box, corridor, and multistory), ventilation type (natural, mechanical, and hybrid), and ventilation mode (externally ventilated, internally ventilated, air supply, air exhaust, buffer, and variable). Nonventilated variants of buffer façades are also identified: breathable and closed cavity façades. Building examples are provided illustrating how DSF typologies have been applied and adapted in a variety of DSF wall constructions. Façade structure is also discussed, and a basic distinction is made between thin- and thick-profile air spaces. No one DSF nomenclature is in universal use; therefore, some alternate classification categories are defined at the end of the chapter.]
