ABSTRACT
[This chapter addresses the progression of double-skin façade architecture from the 1990s leading to the current diversified state of the façade type. The text and an illustrated timeline follow the chronological development of DSF architecture. Following the instigating themes of light, heat, health, comfort, ventilation, acoustics, and energy, additional contextual themes have characterized the development of DSF are identified and discussed: periods of experimentation, proliferation, expansion into new geographical territories, and the supertall scale of application. Building examples illustrate the state-of-the-art in DSF technology at the end of the twentieth century and subsequent developments in the geographical location, scale, and functionality of DSF architecture. Innovation is led by ever-increasing expectations for façade performance and creative experimentation with the technologies on hand.]
