ABSTRACT

[This chapter summarizes motivations and criteria for selection of DSF and other façade types in the context of evolving paradigms for energy, comfort, and other performance factors. A discussion of the benefits and costs of building with DSF is provided with accompanying attention points and cautions. The chapter concludes with discussion of SSF alternatives that compete with and are used instead of or in conjunction with DSF. Building examples illustrate high-performing glass SSF with features like triple-glazing, external shading, natural ventilation, and green screens. Issues pertinent to scale (low-rise and high-rise) and location (temperate and hot-climate) and the option for massive walls with lower window-to-wall ratios are also discussed.]
