[This chapter gives an overview of façade performance issues and tasks as they occur in each phase of architectural project delivery: predesign, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, bidding, fabrication, construction, and post-occupancy. To achieve high-performance buildings, the process of designing façades must be coupled to whole-building sustainable design in an integrated process that brings architects, engineers, and builders together ‘early and often’ to establish and meet performance criteria. Predictive performance evaluation is discussed as it occurs throughout project phases in the forms of computer simulation, analog and digital modeling, and physical testing of full-scale façade mock-ups prior to fabrication. The text provides summary examples of simulation workflows for lighting and thermal analysis of double-skin façades, including discussion of when computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling is useful. As-built and post-occupancy performance assessments are noted as essential steps to confirm predictions and fine-tune completed buildings and inform future projects.]
