ABSTRACT

[Case studies of bioclimatic double-skin façade (DSF) architecture tell stories of practice, exploring the dynamics of how the building came to be, why a DSF was incorporated, who was involved in the design, and how the DSF works in support of project objectives. Façade performance is analyzed across a range of factors using a bioclimatic design matrix. Performance data is included to the extent available. The case studies are selected to convey wide differences in how façades manifest in different climate regions and different sociocultural contexts:

8.1 Marseille Library (Marseille, France, 1997–2004)—Warm/Dry Mediterranean Climate. THICK PROFILE | EXTERNALLY VENTILATED | MULTISTORY.

8.2 Grenoble Courthouse (Grenoble, France, 1994–2002)—Temperate Oceanic Climate. DSF 1—THICK PROFILE | VARIABLE VENTILATION | MULTISTORY. DSF 2—THIN PROFILE | BREATHABLE | BOX WINDOW.

8.3 Cambridge Public Library (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, 2002–09)—Temperate/Humid Continental Climate. THICK PROFILE | VARIABLE VENTILATION | MULTISTORY.

8.4 Manitoba Hydro Place (Winnipeg, Canada, 2004–09)—Cold/Humid Continental Climate. THICK PROFILE | VARIABLE VENTILATION | CORRIDOR.

8.5 Pearl River Tower (Guangzhou, China, 2005–13)—Hot/Humid Subtropical Climate. THIN PROFILE | INTERNALLY VENTILATED | BOX WINDOW.]
