ABSTRACT

Research studies show that accidents during demolition work are more likely to be fatal than those in many other areas of construction work. Causes of accidents which have high potential for serious injury are premature collapse of buildings and structures, and falls from working places and access routes. Investigation of demolition accidents shows that there is usually a failure to plan the work sufficiently at an appropriate stage, which leaves operatives on site to devise their own methods of doing the work without knowledge and information about the dangers that confront them. Failure to plan is, of course, not confined to demolition or even to the construction industry, but it is difficult to think of many other situations where the consequences are visited so rapidly on the employees. For this reason, all construction work which includes an element of demolition falls within the scope of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM).
