ABSTRACT
Lead is a rare metal in the earth’s crust, with deposits scattered throughout the world. The most common ore is galena (lead sulphide, containing 87 per cent lead). Deposits are often found with zinc. Lead is obtained from the ore by smelting to produce lead oxide, which is reduced to lead bullion. Impurities such as silver, gold, zinc and copper are then removed by a refining process.
