ABSTRACT

A safety sign is one which gives a message about health and safety by means of a combination of geometric form, safety colour and symbol or text (words, letters, numbers) or both. The Regulations now cover a variety of methods of communication of health and safety information, in addition to the traditional safety signs which have been in use in a common design since 1986. For example, they now include codes of signalling and the use of audible warning devices. The Regulations implement EU Directive 92/58/EEC, which gives minimum requirements for provision of safety signs at work and standardises signs throughout member states of the European Union. They apply to all places of work and activities where people are employed, but do not apply to transport operations or the marking and supply of dangerous goods.
