ABSTRACT

Pesticides are chemical substances and certain micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi or viruses which are prepared and used to destroy pests of all types, including animals, plants and other organisms. The term ‘pesticide’, as defined by the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA), is “any substance, preparation or organism prepared or used, among other uses, to protect plants or wood or other plant products from harmful organisms, to regulate the growth of plants, to give protection against harmful creatures, or to render such creatures harmless”. It extends to cover herbicides and fungicides, and for the purposes of these Regulations the term also encompasses a wide variety of pest control products including wood preservatives, plant growth hormones, soil sterilisers, bird or animal repellents and masonry biocides, as well as anti-foul boat paints.
