ABSTRACT

The India and the Republic of Korea (ROK) agreed to establish a 'Dialogue on Security and Foreign Policy' to build a future strategic partnership. The two sides also agreed on the need to step up cooperation in matters pertaining to the safety and security of international maritime traffic. President Roh Moo-hyun paid a historic visit to India on 4-6 October 2004 when the two sides agreed to establish a 'Long-Term Cooperative Partnership for Peace and Prosperity'. The first Indian President to visit the ROK was Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. President Lee Myung-bak nominated President Kalam to the high-level 'Eminent Persons' Group' to prepare for the second Nuclear Security Summit held in Seoul in March 2012. The civil society in both the countries is receptive to deeper economic, cultural and educational linkages. The edifice of a strong India-ROK relationship is being constructed on a strong foundation of goodwill, friendship and mutual interest.
