ABSTRACT

Islamization of Java, Sumatra and other islands Indonesia consists of some 6,000 inhabited islands and its various areas differ considerably from each other in language, culture and historical background. e present political boundaries were created by Dutch imperialism in the nineteenth century. Before that there were a number of autonomous political entities in the area. While it is predominantly Muslim, about ten percent of its population is Christian or Hindu. More than half of the population lives on Java, and there has been a tendency for Java to dominate the other areas, resulting in a complex and sometimes

tense relationship with them. is chapter will unavoidably focus more on Java than elsewhere and ignore some areas completely.
