ABSTRACT

Yucatecans in a New Century As I write this epilogue it is 2006, ten years since I first began my research with Yucatecans in Dallas. There have been some significant changes that have affected the lives of the migrants in ways that I never could have imagined a decade ago. Some of these changes have to do with the expected immigrant trajectory-as migrants remain in the United States, their migrant agendas are transformed as they become increasingly integrated into the new society. The second U.S.-born generation (and the 1.5 generation who migrated to the United States as young children) are not faring as well as I would have expected, although the literature on second generation assimilation has raised warnings about this possibility. The most unexpected changes have come as a result of changes in the United States in the last five years. In this epilogue, I will provide an update of the status of Yucatecans in Dallas. I begin with a brief update about Kaal.
