ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 discussed an economic tactic to pursue the strategy of accommodation. For some groups, it simply is not an attractive strategy. They may enter majority society at an inopportune time, during a major recession or depression, for example, lacking expanding job opportunities. They may not have the resources in capital or job skills to enter the occupational structure of the dominant society in sufficient numbers to make headway in climbing the socioeconomic ladder. It takes capital to open one’s own restaurant, retail store, garment factory, and the like. It takes farming skill and the money to get to where cheap land is available to own a farm and thereby thrive economically and socially.
