ABSTRACT

Closely related to the racial and ethnic groups discussed in Chapter 5 are groupsespousing separatism but adopting a tactical approach of psychological means rather than physical isolation. Psychological separatism is often used by millennial movements, whose strong religious ideology provides the means by which the individual can develop a sort of psychological shell to isolate himself or herself from the influence of the majority society, even while living in its midst. Millennial movements are described in the end-of-chapter reading.
