ABSTRACT

Directors collaborate in many ways, depending upon their personalities, styles, experiences, the play, the venue, the ensemble, the production company, and the rehearsal schedule. This book does not require you to adhere to a strict method or system of collaboration, but it is designed to encourage you to experiment with collaborative methods of directing and discover how collaboration works for you, to help you add collaboration to the tools in your director's "toolbox" so that you can use it when and as you see fit. The purpose is not to force you to collaborate all the time-such an approach is neither practical nor desirable-but to expand the range of collaborative tools at your disposal and encourage you to look for productive opportunities for collaboration, ones that will improve your directing process and product. Collaboration does not preclude leadership; rather, it is a style of leadership.
