ABSTRACT

The rhythmic problems in this chapter feature further subdivisions of the beat. At the second subdivision level in simple meters, the beat is divided into 8 parts; at the second subdivision level in compound meters, the beat is divided into 12 parts. In order to use the beat value indicated by the meter signature, music that involves second subdivision patterns is typically performed at moderate or slow tempos. At other times, the division-2 level value is used as the beat (for example, 4 can be processed “in four” using the eighth note as the beat). Composers sometimes indicate this procedure with a metronome marking, but it is often a decision that is left up to the conductor or individual performer.
