ABSTRACT

Voice leading-how chords are created by the motion of individual voices-is one of the main concerns of conventional tonal theory. 1 Even today the voice-leading conventions followed by composers of the tonal era occupy an important part of the course of study in colleges and universities around the world. But a glance at the table of contents of this book will reveal that voice-leading conventions are not a central issue in post-tonal music. In fact, as we shall see later in this chapter, one of the most hallowed principles of voice leading was an early casualty of the assault on musical conventions made by a number of composers around the beginning of the twentieth century.
