ABSTRACT

The rise of electronic music is responsible for the most important development in musical timbre since 1900. In the course of less than two decades, music progressed from an almost total dependence on traditional musical instruments, some of which had not changed appreciably for centuries, to one that allowed the use of any sound that could be imagined or de ned in acoustical terms. The effect of all of this development has been considerable in the area of concert and popular music.
