ABSTRACT
Vaclav Havel, the Czech playwright andhuman rights activist, himself imprisonedfor a time by the Czechoslovak Communist regime, articulated the dreams of many Central and East Europeans as he expressed his vision in 1990 of a “better Europe.” Whether the reality of the expanded post-2004 European Union will fulfill the hopes of Central and East Europeans remains to be seen.
