ABSTRACT

Oliver has observed that the human mind functions in four distinctly different ways: impressionistically, empirically, logically, and rhetorically. 1 The first three are considered in courses in the arts, science, and philosophy. Most students are well acquainted with these three, although the terms used here may be applied in unfamiliar ways. The fourth function of the mind is the primary concern of communicators. It is also the primary concern of this book.
