ABSTRACT

As Victor took his place, seated with the altar before him, he began his opening chant, first with rhythmic rattling and then with an almost inaudible lyric. The assembled group fell silent. Before long, we were called to stand in a half-circle in front of the altar, as Victor proceeded with his introductory invocations. Unexpectedly, he included the visiting anthropologists in his declarations. Present, he said, were “doctors from the great universities of the world.”
