ABSTRACT

An important aspect of culture is expectations about gender-based behaviors and attributes. Researchers have investigated advertisements in many different countries, to determine the messages conveyed about gender roles. The studies consistently find gender stereotyping across cultures. This activity uses a content analysis of magazine advertisements in order to explore culture and gender role expectations. The need for social support may very well be universal across cultures. Children's support networks help them develop the skills they will need to be a competent adult within their own culture. Research indicates that children and adolescents in the circumstances are susceptible to developmental delays, family conflict, depression and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress. Cigdem Kagitcibasi stresses the importance of a fit between home culture and school environment for the academic success and well-being of children. Ethnography provides detailed, culture-specific information which allows to identify patterns and formulating universals.
