ABSTRACT

A large number of psychological studies have examined the characteristics of people who engage in discriminatory behavior. Psychologists are just beginning to contribute to the understanding of large scale hostilities throughout the world. The ethnopolitical conflicts generally involve groups identified by ethnicity, nationality, religion or cultural heritage and are marked by their tremendous impact on civilian populations. Only have psychologists begun to explore the effect of discrimination on the target of actions. One possible consequence of being the target of discrimination is internalized oppression. Institutional discrimination is not limited to issues of race, but includes the systematic perpetuation of other forms of inequality as well. The term institutional racism was first used by Stokely Carmichael and Charles V. Hamilton in their 1967 book, Black Power.
