ABSTRACT

Since no two thinkers have in recent time made such compelling cases, Harper’s Magazine decided to introduce them. We sent each author a copy of the other’s book and asked each to read it. One cold winter night in December, we asked them to dine in the private Tasting Room of New York City’s Le Bernardin restaurant-a small, glass room located inside the kitchen of Chef Gilbert Le Coze. Throughout the conversation Bruno Jourdaine served a menu dégustation beginning with seviche of black bass and poured glasses of St. Veran Trenel (1988). We began the dinner with a blessing in the form of two readings from the Bible.
