ABSTRACT

Ellen Roche, an employee at Johns Hopkins University, was one of many health volunteers who agreed to participate in a study to test the effectiveness of a new asthma medication. But something went wrong and Ellen, the 24-year old volunteer, died. Following her death, in July 2001, the Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP) suspended all federally funded medical research at Johns Hopkins University involving human subjects while they investigated this tragic outcome ( Savulescu & Spriggs, 2002 ).
