ABSTRACT

Our memory is our contact with the world beyond the present. We make assessments about the nature of the reality, how it works, and what has happened in the past, based on what we remember. Most of the time our memories are fairly accurate and we get along fine. However, other times, what we remember and what actually happened may differ. For example, if you misremember that you turned off the oven before you left for vacation when in reality you left it on, you risk burning down your house, or at least a very large gas bill. It is important to understand when our memories can betray us and when they can be trusted. What are the circumstances that cause memory and reality to part ways?
