ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, we provided a basic introduction to the anatomy and physiology of visual perception. Although you might have found the discussion to be extremely detailed, trust us when we tell you that we covered only the essential principles. Surely, you must have come away with the sense that our visual system is extremely complex. In this chapter, we begin to address why this complexity is necessary, as we explore the ways in which our visual system attempts to interpret some simple aspects of visual stimuli.
