ABSTRACT

You will notice in Figure 6.1 that evaluation is a subcategory of interpretation, specifically evaluation is an interpretation that makes a judgment about the discoveries from the analysis. Although we say more about evaluation in Chapter 7, we want you to be aware of the fact that some of your interpretations may have an evaluative component to them. That is acceptable since evaluation is a particular type of interpretation, one with a judgment of quality, but we urge you to be conscious of whether you are making an evaluative move or a more neutral interpretive move. Figure 6.1 demonstrates the fact that although all evaluative conclusions about a message are inherently interpretive, not all interpretive conclusions are necessarily evaluative. For the moment, let's look more specifically at the characteristics of interpretation and some examples.
