Formal Experimentation and Emotional Breakdowns book
Breakdowns is one of the most important works in the history of comics in North America and, indeed, the world. In his 1977 collection Spiegelman uses the comic book medium in ways that had never before been attempted and have only been equalled since. Even without Maus, Breakdowns qualifies Spiegelman as one of the most important individuals to have worked in the comic book medium. Breakdowns is not only ground-breakingly innovative, it is also philosophically profound – Spiegelman’s early work constitutes a powerful statement on mental health, society, and the world after Auschwitz.
