ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores own theoretical and methodological approach, based on the review of the literature. It concerns a reflection on the possibilities of normatively assessing securitisations. The book presents the case studies, beginning with the US, followed by Germany, Mexico and Turkey. It begins with a general overview of the development of climate policies in the respective case. The empirical findings then allow one to draw comparative conclusions on the emergence of particular forms of climate securitisation and to assess the political implications of climate security discourses across cases. The book reviews the themes identified in the introduction and reflect on the merits and limitations of the work. The 2015 United States National Security Strategy lists confronting climate change a major security threat, along with terrorism, violent conflict, the proliferation of mass destruction and health scares.
