ABSTRACT

A outbreak of waterborne disease has many consequences for the community it affects. Some people become ill. Ill or not, most people take measures to avoid the contaminated water. Businesses, especially those involved in food handling, may be required to find alternative sources of water. Government also has responsibilities: obtaining safe water for schools and hospitals, enforcing water use restraints on businesses, perhaps helping arrange for water distribution to citizens. Governmental agencies often must conduct epidemiological and other investigations in response to elevated incidence of illness. The water supply utility, whether public or private, is also affected. It must eliminate contaminants in the water supply and distribution system, restore public confidence, and perhaps help arrange for alternative water supplies for the duration of the episode.
