ABSTRACT

Nepal is a patriarchal society. Hinduism has played an important role in the social organization. The relationship between men and women is shaped by religious ideologies. According to the Manusmriti, women should not have independent status. The following verses from the Manusmriti are revealing in terms of women's status: A girl, a young woman, or even an old woman should not do anything independently, even in house. People in Nepal are discriminated against because of their caste, ethnicity, religion, region, class and social status. There have been many legal reforms in Nepal since 2000. The Muluki Ain 2020 had never been amended to address gender discriminatory provisions until September 2002. Women are being included in all governmental, non-governmental and civil society organizations, including mandatory provision for inclusion of women in the Nepal army. In 2007, the Supreme Court of Nepal decided that the government should scrap all laws that discriminate against individuals based on sexual orientation or gender.
