ABSTRACT

The insurgency was instrumental, although not solely responsible, in bringing monumental transformation to Nepal's social and political sphere. Due to the history of male domination in Nepal, it will take many years for women to experience equal treatment at home as well as in the wider society. But there is certainly a significant shift in women's lives in Nepal. A study on women combatants in Nepal suggests that factors such as socio-economic background, family relation, social discrimination, gendered sexuality, forced recruitment and self-defence were the reasons for women's involvement in the Maoist revolution. Although it appears that women had a much better position in the Maoist party, equality was experienced within the patriarchal structure. The way equality was perceived as counterproductive because it was understood in relation to men's capabilities. The Maoist movement was not only fighting against the state but was also creating awareness among people about different kinds of discrimination.
