ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 examines the China Threat Discourse and contrasts it with competing China discourses. The chapter addresses other China discourses and demonstrates how the CTD has become the dominant contemporary reading of China. The chapter places specific emphasis on notions such as the Red Menace and Yellow Peril. In order to help explain the impact of identity on policy in later chapters, Chapter 2 illustrates how China is portrayed as an Other to the US/Western Self.
