ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 examines the Energy Security Discourse. Lacking a clear definition, energy security means many things to many people, and is often left unarticulated by those who use it. The chapter demonstrates that while dominant discourses such as the ESD emerge, other ES discourses exist at the margins of wider discourse and, while marginalized, they are no less valid within their own contextual settings. The chapter emphasizes the need to articulate the assumptions behind particular definitions and the chapter concludes that contextual notions of ES need to exist at the forefront of future analysis.
