ABSTRACT

This chapter explains some of the system-wide United Nations (UN) learning initiatives that are directed at both internal and external audiences. These endeavours combine aspects of both organizational and social learning. Considered in this review are the central UN libraries, UN research institutes UN media efforts, and selected other centralized UN programming of an investigative character. Considered in this review are the central UN libraries, UN research institutes UN media efforts, and selected other centralized UN programming of a teaching or investigative character. It focuses on areas of policy formulation and implementation for crime prevention and criminal justice; development and promotion of international standards, instruments and cooperation on crime-related issues; and institutional capacity development. Beyond the permanently structured UN facilities and departments dedicated to managing knowledge and information for mixed audience organizational and social learning initiatives, there have been a number of special UN programs and projects over the years that have had similar outreach objectives for distinct topics.
