ABSTRACT

The Continental Airlines case examined before-and-after data. The changes implemented by Gordon Bethune and Greg Brenneman, were entirely consonant with the Cube One framework; and were perfectly synchronized with the subsequent improvements in operating performance. Google’s service offerings alone, while outstanding, would hardly be enough to warrant the company’s extraordinary accolades. The main search engine is impressive, but Google’s other services face stiff competition. Gmail, Google’s email service, provides a clean, sleek interface, but it is not the only company to offer unlimited email storage space. Google’s hiring processes are legendarily complex. Applicants face numerous rounds of interviews, often stretched over a period of months—and sometimes they are assigned “homework” to turn in. At Google, almost no employee is a specialist in the traditional sense. Google’s engineers are not trained for specific tasks. They work on multiple projects. Engineers are allowed—indeed encouraged—to mingle with their colleagues and participate in the projects that capture their interests.
