ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about media and media analysis in Europe. Media analysis is personnel-intensive work. Most other studies encompass only short time periods and investigate only a few hundred articles on selected events. They often analyse no more than a few weeks of newspaper coverage, sometimes based on a detailed investigation of only a few days reporting and limited to specified pages of a newspaper. These sampling decisions are sometimes not sufficiently justified and often downright opaque. This study investigates mass media content as a proxy for transnational problem-solving debates and ethical discourses on the level of ordinary people. Within each country, international crisis events and political reactions towards them are highly contested. The new century began with the terror attacks of 9/11 in New York and Washington, DC. For the first time in NATO history, Article 5 was invoked which provides for collective defence in case of an attack on one Member State.
